Water Lilies
The paintings on this page are an homage to Claude Monet's water lilies, and many of them are based on photos I took at his lily pond in Giverny. Some are included on other theme pages, including details of water lilies taken from larger pictures (i.e., from Balboa Park).
"Reflections of Monet" Commission 2024
Based on Monet's "Green Reflections" (but bluer!), the story behind this 12-foot-wide diptych is the subject of my blog article, "The First Painting I Sold," which includes the amount paid for this composition.
To see the progression of the painting, details, and its installation watch the 3-minute video, "Reflections of Monet: My Painting Process by Leigh Cohn."
Monet Water Liilies Celebration 2024
For the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Impressionism in 2024, I offered several classes and Impressionism lectures at the Carlsbad Senior Center. These water lilies were all based on photos I'd taken and painted in the style of specific Monet compositions.
I have a memory of first seeing Monet's Nymphéas (below) as a preteen with my mother and big sister, Ellen. We had lunch at Marshall Fields department store and then walked over to the Art Institute of Chicago. I was fascinated by all of the Impressionist paintings, and Ellen showed me how the paintings looked almost realistic from a distance but so different when up close. I stood in front of this painting in awe, a feeling that has never left me.
